The COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020 and led to a surge in telecommuting, also in Finland. As telecommuting has increased, so has research on the effects of telecommuting. The commissioner company of the present study, NHK Putkiremontit Ltd, has a strategy of improving the wellbeing of the company employees in their daily life and at work. In this thesis, these questions are examined especially from the point of view of telecommuting. The purpose was to examine if working from home has a positive impact on the cognitive ergonomics of the respondents. In this thesis, the concept of telecommuting is scrutinized. The differences in telecommuting within the European Union before 2020 are analyzed and described, as is the shift in telecommuting practices in Finland during 2020. The thesis provides a description of cognitive ergonomics and looks into the factors that affect cognitive ergonomics. Cognitive strain and factors related to the degree of cognitive strain are discussed. The effects of telecommuting on cognitive strain are discussed in view of the relevant literature. Employees of the commissioner company have been interviewed and their responses are compared with the literature. The conclusion from the literature and from the present study show that telecommuting reduces cognitive strain. Finally, some suggestions, based on employee interviews, for how to develop cognitive ergonomics related to telecommuting are presented. These suggestions relate to provision of equipment for supporting cognitive ergonomics during telecommuting, to improving communication and interaction and to analyzing the risks related to telecommuting....
